报告题目:Advances in Arctic Ocean and Sea Ice Forecasting and Reanalysis: From EnKF to AI-Assisted Methods

报告摘要:The rapid decline of Arctic sea ice is accompanied by accelerated warming of the polar oceans and substantial changes in ocean circulation. Accurately representing Arctic sea ice remains a long-standing challenge for ocean and climate modeling systems. The coupled ocean-sea ice data assimilation system TOPAZ, built upon the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) methodology and the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM), serves as the core forecasting system of the Arctic Monitoring and Forecasting Centre within the Copernicus Marine Service. This talk reviews the progressive development of TOPAZ over the past decade in response to key scientific and operational challenges. It highlights how advances in EnKF-based data assimilation have enhanced the system’s simulation and forecasting capabilities through the integration of new satellite observations, including sea surface salinity and sea ice thickness measurements. The presentation further discusses the application of machine learning techniques to reconstruct Arctic sea ice thickness fields for the period 1991–2010, providing valuable input for the next generation of Arctic reanalysis products. Finally, opportunities for future system development will be examined, with particular emphasis on challenges and emerging issues that are broadly relevant to operational ocean forecasting and data assimilation systems across diverse marine environments.

报告人简介:挪威南森环境与遥感研究中心高级研究员(https://www.nersc.no/staff/jiping-xie)。2008年在中国科学院大气物理所获地球流体力学博士学位。2014年至今在挪威南森环境与遥感研究中心从事海洋数值模式和资料同化方法研究,长期致力于提升海洋和海冰模拟和预报相关研发工作,先后发表SCI论文四十余篇。目前,其做为TOPAZ系统主要开发者之一,负责其中海洋和海冰同化系统设计和开发工作。在欧洲海洋预报服务项目(Copernicus)中,其做为多年分析产品专家之一,负责北极海洋海冰再分析产品。
